Regular Meeting of Parks & Recreation Commission
7:00PM at the Hampden Town Hall
March 28, 2002

Approved:  April 25, 2002

In attendance:

Board members:  Tom Crogan, Jim Morris

Others: Jay Fenlason, Director; Sue Gorman, Clerk; John Flynn, RAH President

Meeting minutes:

Minutes approved from March 14, 2002 meeting

Bills paid:

Verizon, Whips Sporting Goods (pop up goals), Abacus Sports (soccer socks)

Pool:

Gary Swanson reviewed the paperwork and said that the pool could be used this season. Connecticut Valley Artesian Well needs to be called to check/change the valve to stop the overflow into the creek. Also recommended for use was slow dissolving HTH. A gallons/minute check also needs to be done. When no chlorine registers when checked, the water can be released into the creek otherwise drainage needs to be elsewhere. CT. Valley also needs a trench dug 4ft. deep to be able to redo the pool lines. Dana estimated this cost to be $2,400.00 to dig and refill the trench. Mike D’Amours will be called to see if the trench could be dug for less.  Check with Dig Safe before any digging begins.

TWB Flooring:

The estimate is $50,000.00 for the flooring, which is all-inclusive. The fundraising for this will be a golf tournament planned for Elmcrest Country Club. The RAH newsletter will include the information

Sports:

Jay suggested coaches ref their own games and parents could score keep to save money and to avoid the aggravation the young refs/scorekeepers deal with.

Baseball is short on coaches. Uniforms are all right due to lower turnout. Need to have evaluations on June 6th/7th. Softball numbers are still short.

Events:

The trip to Foxwoods Casino on March 24th was postponed due to low signups. This trip will be rescheduled at a later date.

Misc.

--Hydro Pro is giving an estimate for an irrigation system at TWB sport fields.

--Girl Scouts are planning to redo bleachers at Memorial Park and TWB

--Pantusco’s will be holding free soccer clinics for coaches and players. They have asked if they could hand out flyers for the camps they offer.

--The baseball & softball fields need to be prepared for the season. We still are in need of someone for this service. Names to consider checking with are Bill Levakis, Todd Lambert and Liam Hayes.
