The Director’s report was reviewed and accepted,

Becky attended the MCOA conference in October and found it to be very beneficial.

The Veteran’s Breakfast November 9th was a wonderful program attended by over 50 people.

Ninety people have received flu vaccine thus far and we are hoping for another 100 doses next week.

The Brown bag Committee continues to evaluate the local interest- only 5 have expressed desire thus far, we need 12 to begin the program. Tedi-Ann will make notes in the Scribe as well as put out fliers to help in identifying others.

Rudie will wax the floors over Thanksgiving weekend. The friends will pay for this.

The Friends are holding a Bake Sale at Thorton Burgess on December 2 during the craft fair, all donations of baked goods will be appreciated.

Brian has contacted sign companies.  Their styling and dimensions were comparable and estimates ranged from $2,200 to $3,275. It was agreed to contract with Moren Sign at the $2,200 price. We agreed on their proposed design and we will determine color choice by the next meeting.

We have 4 applicants for the under 65 opening on the council.  3 interviewed with us this morning.

1)             Melissa Pearlman- She has lived in Hampden for 18 years, volunteers at the Center, is on the Art Council, a member of the Garden Club and The Friends of Seniors. She is a mother of one, has worked with seniors through the VNA. Her mother has lived in town 2 ½ years. She expressed identifying a need for the Council to grow in providing services for the elderly, especially those with impairments.

2)             Mary Malinski- She has lived here for 6 years with her 9-year old daughter and husband. She has an AD in accounting, has owned her own company for 3 years, has been involved in real estate for 18

years. She would like to become more active in the town affairs and is willing to learn more about our budget issues and hopes to provide beneficial ideas.  She has also volunteered at Brightside, her church and the read-aloud program.  Her mother is 81 and very active. She would like to learn more about the COA and how she can contribute.

3)             Fran Netherwood-Has been a resident in town for 20 years. He is a master electrician and was a facilities disability manager.  He semi retired in 2000 from the Sheriff’s department. He is married with 2

sons and 1 daughter. They were all involved in scouting and are attending college at present. He has been a member of the school committee, and attended various functions here at the Center.  His son’s Eagle Scout

project involved assisting Mabel, an elderly woman.

4)             John D. Flynn- we will interview at our next meeting

After discussion involving the first three candidates it was felt that Melissa is very involved with the senior center (volunteering in the kitchen and on the Friends Board) and has a strong personality. Mary was felt to present as very pleasant and though she has not been involved she would contribute to our committee. With respect to Fran it was acknowledged that he was eager and involved with the town. John Flynn will be interviewed in December.

December 2nd there will be a Department Head meeting in the Melville Room to review the preliminary guidelines for the upcoming budget, revisions are anticipated.

To decorate the Center and provide us with a fundraiser it was decided that members of the COA would decorate small trees and place them on the luncheon tables. These will be raffled off at the December luncheon.

Arlene and George Fisher will be decorating the Center on November 30th. All those willing to help will be welcomed. The fun begins at 10 am.

Ruth has presented the idea of her son’s Cub Scout troop assisting with the spring clean up at the center this year.  This would also involve the parents to “guide” in the project.

The meeting was ended at 9:40 am. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, December 14, 2004

Respectfully submitted,

Ruth Haley, Secretary
